How To Save Money On Prom

Prom night is one of the most exciting nights of your high school career and has the potential to be one of the most memorable too. But wouldn’t you rather remember your prom night for the fun times you had with your friends instead of how much money you shelled out for that one night? A memorable prom night doesn’t have to cost you a year’s allowance! We’ve got ideas to help you have a great time and still have enough cash leftover for breakfast the next day.

Plan Ahead

If you wait until the last minute to make transportation arrangements or your prom tuxedo rental, you could end up with some unexpected charges. There are some fees, like prom tickets, that you can’t avoid, so purchase these items as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

Looking Great

You want to look your best and impress your date, right? A tuxedo or sharp looking suit is a sure way to do that. Chances are, your calendar isn’t packed with black tie events, so there’s no need to buy a tuxedo. If you do buy a tuxedo, you’ll probably outgrow it before you even have a chance to wear it again, so renting is definitely your best option. Many people think that a rented tux will automatically be heavy and ill-fitting. Our tuxedos are made of lightweight wool so you’ll be able to dance the night away without sweating through your tux, and our award-winning tailors can make your rental look like it was custom made for you. This requires some planning ahead, but it’s well worth it.

Some other options for saving money on attire:

  • [icon type=”angle-double-right” class=”accent fa-li”]Ask older friends or family members if they have something you can borrow. They’ll enjoy helping out and being part of your big night!
  • [icon type=”angle-double-right” class=”accent fa-li”]Check online: look for coupons (like the one from Tuxedo Wearhouse: https://www.www.tuxedowearhouse.com/specials/students/) or check out stores that are moving or going out of business. They often offer deep discounts to get rid of merchandise.
  • [icon type=”angle-double-right” class=”accent fa-li”]If you already have a tuxedo from concert band or choir, you could just rent a vest or cummerbund that matches your date’s attire. DONE!
  • [icon type=”angle-double-right” class=”accent fa-li”]Sign up for a referral program such as our prom agents program. Click here (https://www.www.tuxedowearhouse.com/refer/) to learn more.
  • [icon type=”angle-double-right” class=”accent fa-li”]Don’t be afraid to ask for a deal. Some stores might be willing to offer a discount if a large group of friends rent tuxedos all at the same time.
  • [icon type=”angle-double-right” class=”accent fa-li”]Be open to different style suggestions. Maybe even try brands you’ve never heard of. No one will know or care what brand your suit is.

Dining Options

So many people spend a lot of money on a 5-star dining experience for prom. Will you really remember that a week later? While an elegant meal at a fancy restaurant can be fun, it won’t necessarily make for a lifelong memory. Instead of splurging on an extravagant meal, plan something inventive and fun. You could host a pre-prom dinner at your house for your date and friends. If you want to go for a more romantic gesture, a special picnic is a sure way to impress your date. But if you’re going to prom with a group of friends and want to keep things casual, pick a restaurant that you all enjoy regularly. You’re sure to see some familiar faces there and they’ll love seeing you all decked out for your big night. If you choose to dine out, remember to tip your server. Also keep in mind that if you’re eating with a large group (usually eight or more) the gratuity for your server may already be included.

Take your own Pictures

Skip the “formal” pictures at prom with the phony backdrops. Instead, stage your own photoshoot! Scout out a location in a park and ask someone you trust to take your photos there. Outdoor photos generally turn out better than ones taken indoors, so you’re sure to end up with some great photos and even more fun memories. And don’t worry if the camera isn’t top-of-the-line…even phones have really good cameras these days.

Transportation

When most people think of going to prom, a big stretch limo is what comes to mind. However, most limo companies require at least a two hour rental, and some even require a four hour rental. With rental prices starting at around $250 per hour, that could really add up. We’re not suggesting you borrow your mom’s minivan, but there are definitely some more budgetconscious options to consider. Instead of a pricey limo, consider asking a friend or family member with a nice car if they would consider loaning it to you for the evening. You could also use a service like Uber or Lyft. If you’d still rather have a chauffeur, consider renting a party bus with a large group of friends. A party bus or SUV limo offers more room than your standard limo, and usually costs less per person. As with dinner, remember to tip your driver at the end of the night.

Most Importantly…

Remember, a little advanced planning goes a long way and can even help you save money in the long run. No matter how you decide to celebrate your prom, be true to yourself. Don’t feel pressured to go along with a plan that you don’t feel comfortable with. Be realistic with your expectations for the evening, and have fun. Even if things don’t go exactly as planned, make the best of it, and you’ll have memories that last a lifetime.
